Flash and HTML versions for better SEO

Ok, so you see a Flash website that blows you away and the first thing you think is, "I want one of those".

You get into the office the next day and someone who knows a bit more about the internet tells you that it won't be so good for search engines and that you'll need an HTML version of the site too.

Two sites, twice the cost?

No. And here's why.

A website isn't usually just what you see on your screen. There tends to be a database and a bunch of code that does a bunch of things. Like:

  • working out what gets shown
  • logging a user in
  • logging a user out
  • telling you that the auction is over and you lost out on that one-off original 1978 armchair

Done the right way, the code that runs behind the scenes shouldn't care about the front end of your website, be it Flash or HTML. The database even less so!

Can you see where we're going with this?

Most of the work in building a website is in the bits you don't see. So having two or more front ends shouldn't mean twice the cost.
